“It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.”Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone
Hi! My name is Amanda. I’m a Hufflepuff, an INFP, an Aquarius, and a sophomore magazine media and graphic design student at Drake University.
On campus, I am involved with my sorority as well as an on-campus nonpartisan political magazine, Drake Political Review, and I work at a nonpartisan public policy research institute, The Harkin Institute.
Within my sorority, I hold the position of Online Media Director. Through this, I maintain regular postings on our social media accounts and website. With this, it is my goal to best portray our chapter’s values and goals through the content that is posted on our various accounts, while also understanding the audiences of each platform.
For Drake Political Review, I work as the Assistant Art Director where I create artwork and designs that are used within the magazine. To do this I must work with the editors and writers in order to ensure the best portrayal of each story is presented through the visuals I create. It is my duty to maintain nonpartisanship and the branding of our magazine through my art.
At the Harkin Institute, I aid in the creation of graphics and social media postings as the Communications Assistant. I work creatively while ensuring all designs are properly aligned with the Institute branding standards while gaining experience in communications, events, and programming.
I am a passionate person who is driven by my values in making the world a better place, which I see myself doing through journalism. I think of myself as a visual storyteller – a creative person who hopes to help others tell their stories through the art and designs I create.
My dream is to work in publishing, whether that be aiding in the creation of magazines or books. I am perfect for a creative team because I find myself constantly gaining inspiration from other people and their processes.
My hobbies include cooking, baking, playing Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley, rewatching Parks and Recreation 20 times because I’ll never find another show as good, and scrolling TikTok for hours.
My favorite story, if not obvious from my quote, is Harry Potter, and I think of those books as what got me first interested in reading. I have always been a reader, but I had never consumed a series before like I did with those books. Now I am forever chasing the thrill I got from picking up the first book in fourth grade.
