For many people, myself included, sticking to a routine can be difficult when you’re home all the time and your days blend together. However, self-care is incredibly important, especially now. Taking care of your body can actually help you take care of your mind.
A great way to jump-start your day is by washing your face, which I find helps me feel more awake and energized. Having a skincare routine that you can do every day is a way to bring some normalcy into your life when everything seems anything but normal.
My Morning Routine
Products I use:
- Alcohol-Free Toner
- Vitamin C Serum
First thing in the morning, I start my day by washing my face, brushing my teeth and brushing my hair.
In the morning, I do not use a full face wash because I have sensitive, dry skin. It tends to get irritated with too much washing. I have found that using toner instead of a face wash in the morning can be incredibly helpful with that. Toner cleans off any of the sweat or oil that you might have on your face from sleeping, and it does so without stripping the skin and drying it out.
Note the ingredients!
It is important when purchasing any skincare product to read the label. I try to use as many natural products on my skin as I can (though sometimes chemicals are necessary). However, sometimes skincare that claims to be natural/organic is filled with ingredients that may have negative long-term effects on your skin.
One good thing to check for in the ingredients list is alcohol. Alcohol is something that I try my best to steer clear of in skincare products. It is incredibly drying and can be an irritant to sensitive skin.
However, there are times when alcohol is necessary in skincare products, such as Benzyl Alcohol. Benzyl Alcohol can be useful in organic products to ensure safety from bacteria. If you find a skincare product that has Benzyl Alcohol low on the list (think to the near end), then it will likely not cause any harm. It is always smart to do a patch test for any new skincare products you try, though.
What I use
The toner that I have been enjoying recently is the Mario Badescu Alpha Grapefruit Cleansing Lotion. It leaves my skin feeling clean but not stripped. I am never worried about any oil or sweat sticking to my face after using it. It perfectly preps my skin for moisturizer.
After toner, I mix my moisturizer with a vitamin C serum. Vitamin C can be helpful in skincare in brightening the skin and calming down any hyperpigmentation from acne scarring. It can also diminish the appearance of fine lines. If you are using vitamin C, it is crucial that you wear sunscreen. This is especially true if you are applying vitamin C in the morning. Vitamin C can make your skin more susceptible to sun damage, so if you do not use sunscreen, it can actually harm your skin more than it will help.
Know what works for you
I finish off my morning skincare routine with sunscreen. It is important to note that both chemical and physical sunscreen is great, but if you have sensitive skin like I do, you may want to look more into physical sunscreens. For some people, they can be less irritating for their skin. However, I think if you find the right chemical sunscreen then you will be fine, sensitive skin or not. You should aim for SPF 30 as it is the most effective in blocking the harmful effects of the sun. There is no need to wear anything higher than SPF 30 as they are hardly any more effective than 30 is.
I haven’t been going outside much due to quarantine, so I have been using an SPF 20. It is still smart to wear sunscreen even if you are staying inside because light will still come in through your windows and can still affect your skin.
I like to keep my morning routine very simple and quick because, as a college student, I tend to not always give myself enough time to fully get ready in the morning, so it is nice to have a quick skincare routine that can be completed without worrying about the time you’re wasting doing it.
